Understanding temae through a comparison of forty-four schools
More than four hundred years have passed since Sen Rikyū brought chanoyu to maturity. During this time, many tea masters appeared, and several schools founded by them have been handed down to the present day. Because practitioners of chanoyu usually belong to a single school, they are often surprised when they encounter the distinctive teachings and procedures of other traditions.
This book examines the temae procedures of forty-four schools of chanoyu. By objectively evaluating the differences in their procedures and clarifying the relationships among the schools, it explores how temae has changed from the time of Sen Rikyū to the present.

Revealing connections among chanoyu schools through data
How do the temae procedures of chanoyu differ from one school to another, and what do these differences reveal about the relationships among them? This book investigates forty-four schools of chanoyu, converting the furo-style usucha temae of each school into data, which is then subjected to multivariate analysis and phylogenetic estimation.
By objectively comparing the differences in temae, the book clarifies the relationships among the schools and considers how the procedures of chanoyu—presumably beginning with Sen Rikyū—have changed over time to reach their present form.

44流派を比較して見えてくる点前の姿
千利休が茶の湯を大成してから、400年以上の時間が経過している。この間にさまざまな茶匠があらわれ、かれらを流祖とする流派のいくつかが現在まで伝えられている。茶の湯を学ぶ人は一般に一つの流派に属するため、他の流派の独自の教えにふれると、そのちがいに驚かされることもすくなくない。本書では大小さまざまな44流派の点前を調査し、点前のちがいを客観的に評価することにより、流派相互の関係を明らかにし、千利休から現在にいたる点前の変化を考察する。

新たなる茶の湯研究の地平を拓く
茶の湯のお点前は、流派により、どこがどのように違うのか。お点前の違いから、それぞれの流派の関係はどのように見えてくるのか。大小さまざまな44流派を調査し、各流派の風炉薄茶点前をデータ化して、多変量解析と系統推定による数理的分析を試みる。さらに、現在の点前と近世初期〜中期の茶書の記述を精査し、点前が変化してきたことについて検討。資料編として44流派の系譜も紹介する。

Hirota Yoshitaka

Researcher specializing in chanoyu, focusing on the practice of temae and the iemoto system. He was born in Hyōgo Prefecture in 1959. In 2012, he completed the doctoral program at the Graduate School of Intercultural Studies, Kobe University, and received his Ph.D. He is currently a part-time lecturer at Kyoto University of the Arts.
His publications include the Japanese edition of this volume(『お点前の研究―茶の湯44流派の比較と分析―』, Osumi-Shoten, 2015) and Kingendai ni okeru Chanoyu Iemoto no Kenkyū [Study of Chanoyu Iemoto in Modern Times] (『近現代における茶の湯家元の研究』, Keibunsha, 2012), as well as numerous articles. He also translated into Japanese Dr. Kristin Surakʼs Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice (Stanford University Press, 2013), published as MTMJ: Nihonrashisa to Chadō ( 『MTMJ―日 本らしさと茶道―』, Saihatesha, 2018), thereby introducing the results of overseas research on chanoyu to readers in Japan.

廣田吉崇

茶の湯研究者。点前と家元制度を中心に研究している。1959年、兵庫県生まれ。2012年、神戸大学大学院国際文化学研究科博士課程を修了し、博士号を取得。現在、京都芸術大学非常勤講師。
著書に、本書の日本語版『お点前の研究 ― 茶の湯44流派の比較と分析』(大隅書店、2015年)のほか、『近現代における茶の湯家元の研究』(慧文社、2012年)があり、論文も多数発表している。Kristin Surak著 Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice(Stanford University Press, 2013)を翻訳し、『MTMJ―日本らしさと茶道―』(さいはて社、2018年)として刊行。海外における茶の湯研究の成果を日本の読者に紹介している。

Tim Cross

Fukuoka University professor who teaches an undergraduate translation course. He has also taught tea-related courses to undergraduate exchange students at Fukuoka University and Kyushu University (JTW), graduate students at Kyushu University (IMAP), and undergraduate and graduate students of National Taiwan University.
His Ideologies of Japanese Tea: Subjectivity, Transience and National Identity was published by Brill in 2009. His 2013 translation of a Horimoto Kazushige paper appears as “Chanoyu in Hakata: Zen, Karamono and the Reception of Tea Ceremony” in the Hakata: The Cultural Worlds of Northern Kyushu collection, edited by Andrew Cobbing. Two additional chapters written by him which address Yamakasa, noh and Hakata masculinity appear in that same volume. He has translated the prize-winning 『茶の湯と筑前: 利休らの足跡と「南方録」の系譜』, written by Matsuoka Hirokazu (松岡博和).

Tracing the Lineages of Tea through Temae
This book is a comparative study of the procedures of making tea in chanoyu and the Way of Tea (chadō, sadō). There are many schools in chanoyu and each school defines itself with its own distinctive serving procedures. These serving procedures are called temae, or more politely, o-temae. What is different in the temae of each school? And what can be inferred about the relationships between tea schools from the viewpoint of those differences in the temae?  The temae of forty-four schools of chanoyu currently practiced in Japan are examined in this study, and the results of that analysis are presented in this book. Based on these findings, the book also considers how these procedures have changed over time.

Opening New Horizons in Tea Ceremony Research
How do the procedures of the tea ceremony (temae) differ among the various schools? What do these differences reveal about the relationships among them? This study surveys forty-four tea schools, large and small, and converts the procedures of their furo usucha temae (風炉薄茶点前) (thin tea preparation using a brazier) into data. Using multivariate analysis and phylogenetic inference, it attempts a quantitative and mathematical examination of their similarities and divergences. In addition, by closely comparing present-day procedures with descriptions found in tea manuals from the early to mid-Edo period, the study investigates how temae have changed over time. A documentary appendix also presents the lineages of the forty-four schools.

点前からたどる茶の湯の系譜
本書は、茶の湯と茶道における点前の手順を比較研究したものである。茶の湯には多くの流派があり、それぞれの流派は独自の点前で自らを位置づけている。これらの点前は点前、あるいはより丁寧に言えばお点前と呼ばれる。各流派の点前にはどのような違いがあるのだろうか。そして、点前の相違点から、流派間の関係について何が推測できるのだろうか。本書では、現在日本で行われている44の流派の点前を検証し、その結果をまとめている。さらにその結果に基づいて、これらの手順がどのように時代とともに変化してきたかを考察する。

データで読み解く茶の湯流派のつながり
茶の湯の点前は、流派によりどこがどのように異なるのか、点前のちがいにより、それぞれの流派の関係はどのようにみえてくるのか。本書では大小さまざまな44流派を調査し、各流派の風炉薄茶点前をデータ化し、多変量解析と系統推定により、数理的分析をこころみる。点前の違いを客観的に比較することによって流派相互の関係を明らかにし、千利休にはじまるであろう茶の湯の点前が、どのような変化をへて現在の姿へといたったのかを考察する。

Hirota Yoshitaka

Hirota Yoshitaka is a researcher of chanoyu culture whose work focuses on temae procedures and the iemoto system. Born in Hyōgo Prefecture in 1959, he began studying chanoyu while an undergraduate at the University of Tokyo. While working in the Hyōgo Prefectural Government, the 1995 Great Hanshin–Awaji Earthquake prompted him to shift his focus from practice to research. He received his PhD from Kobe University.
His publications include the Japanese edition of the present book, A Study of O-temae: Comparison and Analysis of 44 Schools of Chanoyu (Ōsumi Shoten, 2015; POD ed., Saihatesha, 2020), as well as Study of Chanoyu Iemoto in Modern Times (Keibunsha, 2012), in addition to numerous articles. He also translated Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice by Kristin Surak (Stanford University Press, 2013) into Japanese, published as MTMJ: Nihonrashisa to Chadō (Saihatesha, 2018). His Study of Chanoyu Iemoto in Modern Times received the Hayashiya Tatsusaburō Prize for the Encouragement of Research in the History of the Performing Arts.

廣田吉崇

茶の湯文化研究者。点前や家元制度について研究をおこなう。1959年兵庫県生まれ。東京大学在学中から茶の湯を学んでいたが、兵庫県職員として勤務していた1995年の阪神淡路大震災を契機に、実践から研究へと軸足をうつした。博士(学術)神戸大学。
著書に本書の日本語版『お点前の研究 ― 茶の湯44流派の比較と分析』(大隅書店、2015年。POD版、さいはて社、2020年)のほか、『近現代における茶の湯家元の研究』(慧文社、2012年)があり、論文多数発表。Kristin Surak著 Making Tea, Making Japan: Cultural Nationalism in Practice(Stanford University Press, 2013)を翻訳し、『MTMJ―日本らしさと茶道―』(さいはて社、2018年)として刊行。『近現代における茶の湯家元の研究』により、第8回林屋辰三郎藝能史研究奨励賞を受賞。

Tim Cross

Tim Cross is a professor at Fukuoka University. He has taught lectures on tea-related courses to undergraduate exchange students at Fukuoka University and Kyushu University (JTW), graduate students at Kyushu University (IMAP), and undergraduate and graduate students at National Taiwan University. He teaches the Nambō Ryū chanoyu, and is also knowledgeable in noh performance, including singing and dancing, as well as drumming, and participates in the practice of local traditional culture.
His publications include Ideologies of Japanese Tea: Subjectivity, Transience and National Identity (Brill, 2009). His translation of a Horimoto Kazushige paper, “Chanoyu in Hakata: Zen, Karamono and the Reception of Tea Ceremony,” appears in Andrew Cobbing (ed.), Hakata: The Cultural Worlds of Northern Kyushu (Brill, 2013). He has also translated Tea and Chikuzen: The Footsteps of Rikyū and Others and the Lineage of the Nampōroku by Matsuoka Hirokazu (Kaichōsha, 2010), whose original Japanese edition received the 21st Annual Award for Encouragement of Chadō Culture and Studies (2011).
